Credit Privacy Numbers (CPNs) are nine-digit file numbers that follow the same algorithm as Social Security Numbers (SSNs). Currently, federal law allows individuals to “legally” use CPNs for financial reporting and protects those individuals who do not wish to disclose their SSAN. Social Security Numbers are numbers provided by a third party (Social Security Administration) and acquiring a Social Security Number is NOT required. Social Security Accounts are trust accounts created with the living man or woman being the beneficiary. It is optional and using a SSN is 100% voluntary. Any man or woman can obtain an EIN, ITIN, or use a CPN.
Furthermore, 42 U.S. Code § 408 – Penalties, expresslly stipulates: (8) discloses, uses, or compels the disclosure of the social security number of any person in violation of the laws of the United States;… shall be guilty of a felony and upon conviction thereof shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned for not more than five years, or both..”
